Learn about the impact of Hops on foam and wee beasties and smell the aromas of Noble, American and European Hops. What is an IBU anyway and can you really taste 100 IBUs? Talk to a brewery expert about the hops they use and why and meet a local Hop Farmer.  Try a beer infused with funky flavors like anise or juniper berries. The event format is like speed dating where you will move from table to table and engage in activities and conversations with scientists, brew experts and other patrons.

Sip and Sleuth: Detecting Beer Off Flavors
Any notes of butter or bananas? Wet basement or pennies? Does the beer taste leathery or stale, oily or rancid? Buttery notes are called diacetyl, banana is isoamyl acetate, wet basement is musty and pennies is metallic.  There are 32 different off flavors.  These off flavors may be common in beer but when present imply something went wrong in the brewing or stoarge of the beer.  This event will make you a more sophisticated beer drinker while having fun.  Trained beer tasters will lead you and your friends through 24 different flavors.  You will also taste 5 different Raleigh Brewing Beers and together, with your brewing expert, describe the flavors and aromas in each.  The event format is seated so everyone should arrive by the event start time – 6:30 pm.

The Brewers will be on site to tell you about their Breweries and Beers while you sample from their selection. Not the “shots” you get at Beer Fests, but an 8 oz. pour for you to enjoy while learning about their beers, and listening to great blues bands.
